What about: looking at those students who are of low SES and yet they are NOT retained? A good description of financially-disadvantaged students who are successful in school and describing the factors potentially contributing to their success compared to those who are low SES and are not succeeding academically.
I think a rich description of the problem in your school, as you described it to me, and data collection from a variety of students in the two groups I indicated above and seeing what works for these kids and what doesn’t would be a very powerful contribution to the literature. It would be mixed methods but heavy on the qualitative, so you have to be prepared to be a strong writer to best capture the information. What do you think?
